When people across the country and indeed the entire world found themselves stuck at home with A LOT of time on their hands, there was a sudden newly found or rediscovered enthusiasm for running, riding bikes, and working out in general. Some people were lacing up their running shoes, or throwing a leg over a bike for the first time, others for the first time in a long time. There was an enormous uptick in the number of people getting out to be active, stay or become fit, or just get out of the house for an hour or two. But as swiftly as it had started, many people saw their newfound passion come to a screeching halt, as injuries, aches and pains, lack of motivation, or general uncertainty about how to keep up their habit started to affect their exercise endeavors. This is exactly where a coach can be helpful.
Working with a coach can help an individual at any level identify their unique training needs, then turning that into a big picture plan centered around the individual’s goals. Whether you’re training for health and fitness, trying to finish your first century bike ride, qualify for the Boston Marathon, or win the sprint at a local road race, working with a coach can help you get their in the best shape possible, without falling into traps such as injury or burnout along the way. Having another individual to be accountable to for your efforts can be the perfect motivator in the absence of group activities, or even races. And when races and events do begin again, wouldn’t you like to hit the ground running and capitalize on all the progress you’ve already been making, instead of waiting months for the focus of a race to get you going?
In some ways, this might be the perfect time to start working with a coach, with more freedom and flexibility in our ability to get out to train.
